Almost home

We have now been in the NICU a month and the girls are 36 weeks gestation. If Ms Audrey can avoid any set backs in the next few days, she will most likely be home at the end of the week! She has been regulating her temperature, keeping her heart rate and oxygen saturation up, gaining weight, finishing her bottles, & she has passed her car seat test! We cannot wait to have her home all to ourselves! It's like Christmas!

Evangeline continues to recover from her infection. She still has a swollen abscess on her jaw that they think is an infected salivary gland, but it has been going down. Hopefully it will continue to go down and won't be a problem or require surgery. They FINALLY started feeds again (she was starving- trying her darnedest to milk that paci). She is tolerating them well, and they are increasing the amount daily and weaning off her IV fluids. She is on antibiotics until Tuesday, and I'm hoping by the end of the week she may be able to get off her PICC line, and take off with bottle feeding! We love this precious girl, our hearts ache for all she has been through.

Look at those beautiful girls! Such bright eyes! Our prayers remain with all of you, for continued improvement and steady growth for the girls and for God's sustaining power in these tiring days and nights.

  3. Ryan and Laura,
I have known Susan and her family most of my life living in Cottonwood as a child. I check your blog daily and look forward to your positive words and touching pictures! My husband and I had twins four months ago. Born at 35 weeks, Avery weighed only 3 pounds 4 ounces and spent 24 days in the NICU. Her "little" brother Griffin was born at 5 pounds and hung out in the NICU with her for 9 days. I feel a connection to you just from reading your blog because I know the pain, frustration, confusion, helplessness and hurt that you both feel. IT WILL GET BETTER! You have two beautiful babies and they are VERY lucky to have two wonderful, loving parents. I wish you much luck and can't wait to read more about the day when they are both at home!

  4. I'm so happy for you and your family! It sounds like they're doing wonderful!

I sent a comment earlier about also having surgery in Houston. I delivered my girls on Sunday, at 29 weeks gestation. They're both in the NICU right now. Maddie was 2 lbs, 11 oz; and Millie was 3 lbs, 12 oz. They're both seem to be doing okay. I'm frustrated because I wanted to carry them to term. I'm also trying to pump but that's not going as well as I would like.

Anyways, I want to say congratulations and thank you for your blog because it gives others like me hope.

  6. Laura and Ryan, Lori Cabe has generously communicated with me over the past six months, sharing Heacker genealogy that was previously unknown to me. (My great-grandmother, Sarah Aline, was the second-born child and oldest daughter of William Joseph Heacker and Armilda Wright Crawford.) What initiated this interest in the Heacker branch? I was looking for the spiritual threads back in Tennessee that might tie my generation to the past--wondering if the faith of our forefathers (and foremothers) had been kindled and passed, looking for the source of my spiritual heritage. How like the Lord to find it--right in my backyard in Fort Worth. It has been an honor to pray for you and your daughters, my newest and smallest cousins. I have shared your story with my daughter who recently bore a second child as well as some of my sisters and close cousins (also your cousins) with Faith of Fathers ringing in my ears. I look forward to meeting and visiting with you both--when life settles down a bit for you although that is now a relative concept in light of parenting twins! Beth Peel Leggieri, Denton, TX
